2015 PILARC TRIP: Modesto, California
January 3-6
Our second annual trip working with California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) was in Modesto, California. Nineteen students worked together over three days under the direction of CRLA staff to gather data regarding municipal services such as garbage collection and sewage services. Students also interviewed locals regarding the housing conditions of migrant laborers to ascertain whether any violations may be taking place. Students visited neighborhoods to interview various homeowners and renters and also visited local flea markets, churches and commercial areas. Students also worked to compile data that CRLA can use to petition for the expansion of municipal services to unincoporated parts of the county where large immigrant populations reside.
